Overview of Too-Ashuu Pass & Suusamyr
Too-Ashuu Pass (3,180m tunnel / 3,586m old pass) cuts directly through the dramatic Kyrgyz Alatoo mountain chain, connecting the Chuy valley and Bishkek to the vast high-altitude Suusamyr Valley.
Located approximately 135 km from Bishkek along the strategic M41 highway, Too-Ashuu receives substantial snowfall from western and northern weather fronts, locking in dry, light powder throughout winter.
Ski Touring & Terrain Highlights
- Roadside High Alpine Starts (3,180m): One of the quickest ways to access 3,000m+ terrain in Kyrgyzstan without long approaches. Park directly on the highway shoulder near the tunnel portals and immediately step onto your skin tracks.
- North Portal vs. South Portal:
- North Portal (2,900m – 3,600m): Holds cold, dry, wind-sheltered powder in shaded gullies.
- South Portal & Suusamyr Flanks (3,100m – 3,800m): Broad, sunlit alpine faces opening into the endless expanse of the Suusamyr high steppe.
- Trip Logistics & Stopover Value: Too-Ashuu is the perfect warm-up or cooldown zone for international skiers arriving via Bishkek Manas Airport (FRU) before making the longer journey eastward to the Jyrgalan Yurt Network.
