Overview of Yrdik Valley
Located just southwest of Karakol, Yrdik (Irdyk) Valley is one of the most accessible yet rewarding backcountry skiing zones in the Issyk-Kul region. Known for its historical Dungan settlement at the base of the mountains, the valley leads up into narrow forested canyons and wide high-alpine amphitheaters.
Ski Touring & Terrain Characteristics
- Tree Skiing on Storm Days (2,200m – 2,800m): When heavy clouds and high winds shut down high-alpine touring in exposed basins, Yrdik’s dense Schrenk spruce forests provide exceptional visibility, natural wind shielding, and deep blower powder.
- Upper Alpine Bowls (2,800m – 3,500m): Climbing above the forest canopy unlocks expansive open bowls with consistent 30°–38° pitches and long uninterrupted fall-lines.
- Yurt Living & Culture: Winter yurt stays in the valley offer authentic hospitality, wood stove warmth, and rich local culinary traditions after full days on skins.
