To reach the backcountry touring mecca of Karakol and our yurt lodges, you have two primary international airport options:
- Manas International Airport (FRU) in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan
- Almaty International Airport (ALA) in Almaty, Kazakhstan
Comparison: Bishkek (FRU) vs. Almaty (ALA)
| Route Metric | Bishkek (FRU) → Karakol | Almaty (ALA) → Karakol |
|---|---|---|
| Distance | 400 km (250 miles) | 380 km (235 miles) via Korday or Kegen |
| Drive Time (Winter) | ~5.5 to 6.5 hours | ~6 to 7 hours (including border control) |
| Border Crossing | None (Domestic drive) | Kazakhstan → Kyrgyzstan Border |
| Flight Options | Turkish Airlines, Pegasus, FlyDubai | Lufthansa, Qatar, Air Astana, Turkish |
| Road Quality | Modern paved highway along Issyk-Kul | Highway + scenic winter mountain pass |
Option 1: Fly into Bishkek (FRU) - Recommended for Simplicity
Flying directly into Bishkek is the simplest and most hassle-free option because there are no international land borders to cross during the winter transfer.
- The Route: The highway travels east through the scenic Boom Gorge and continues along the north or south shore of Lake Issyk-Kul directly into Karakol.
- Our Private Shuttle: We arrange private Mercedes Sprinter vans or 4x4 Toyota minivans that meet your flight at any time of night, store all ski bags inside, and drive you straight to Karakol.
Option 2: Fly into Almaty (ALA) - Best Flight Deals
Almaty often offers more direct flights from Frankfurt, Doha, and Istanbul via major carriers like Lufthansa and Air Astana.
- Winter Border: In winter, transfers typically pass through the 24/7 Korday border post (or the Kegen border depending on winter status and road conditions).
- Transfer Service: Our drivers can meet you at Almaty airport or facilitate an efficient vehicle change at the border.
